PET COMMITTEE

Dear pet lovers, I have started a pet committee in Memorial Northwest and invite you to get involved and join one or more of the committees.   Examples of committees are, Fosters for pets during the interim of finding the owners or loving forever homes, telephone committee, signs committee, education committee, website committee, and many other areas, to many to mention.  Contact Elvie Kingston – 281-320-2912   Email:  eljlkingston@sbcglobal.net.

We want to have hundreds of email addresses of everyone in MNW that is willing to help find the owners of lost and found pets.  This will allow us to send out a lost/found pet alert immediately after we are contacted of the pet problem.  If you would like to help us with this endeavor, please send me your email address.

Tip:  Remember that your pet depends on you for its safety.  Please put your pet’s collar and tags back on them when you bathe or groom them.  We receive many calls that the pet ran away without the collar after the bath/grooming.

                            Faithfully,

                            Elvie Kingston

Pet Care Thoughts

Summer days are coming. Train your pet to drink from a pet faucet available at pet stores in our area. If this isn't possible leave fresh large bowls of water outside each day for your animals. Don't let old water sit it breeds mosquitos and attracts silver fish.

Make sure your animal has shelter from the sun. Animal paws can be burned by stepping on hot brick patio's, concrete and also onto metal truck beds. Be sure when your pet is in the car to leave windows open enough to let air in.  Check for ticks since many of us have trees in our yard.

Yard check call the garden club and ask for a list of harmful plants and shrubs that may be harmful for your pet to snack on.

If you have a drainage area that look like a long driveway please maintain the drain in it so that is doesn't become a breeding ground for mosquitos.

Check your old fence for loose rusty nails hanging out and areas that a puppy can manage to use as an escape route. New fences check bottom rung for nails that missed catching the wood. Our neighbors new fence looked great until it sliced open our puppies leg. $387.00 later and the lovely cone he had to wear until they could take out the stitches.

Fruit trees and bird feeders both attract rats, weasels and lets not forget raccoons. Small and large animals left outside can be in danger if you have these in your yard or your neighbor.

Pool chemicals should be used in moderation not only for the life of the plaster but also for the animal that might be drinking out of it.  Lagoon or dark bottom pools attract snakes.

Veterinary services check ahead of time do your homework. Pricing varies on initial exam costs, rabies shots, worm testing, flea control medication. You can get a rabies shot good for three years.  It is good to know if the Vet will write  a prescription or his assistant will smile at your and tell you that isn't their policy.
